A motor vehicle in traffic on the road can independently be operated only by a person holding a valid driving license or by a foreign driver’s license and international driving license.
It is recommended that you keep your identification documents with you permanently. If police traffic control stops you on the road, you will be asked for:
– Valid driving license (for foreigners , international driving license).

  • In Montenegro, the “Green Card” insurance of the European Union is recognized. Local insurance is required if you stay for a longer period of time.
  • The proof of ownership of the vehicle (or registration document); in the case of renting a vehicle, the proof of rent (i.e. a contract for renting a vehicle).

Unless otherwise indicated, the rule is that the priority is given to vehicles coming from the right side.
On the road in populated places, the driver must not  drive at speed greater than 50 km / h, or at a speed higher than the speed allowed by the assigned traffic sign (exceptionally on the road in the settlement , a speed greater than 50 km / h and maximum 80 km / h).
On the road outside the settlement, the driver must not drive the vehicle faster than:
130 km / h on freeways;
100 km / h on roads reserved for the traffic of motor vehicles;
80 km / h on other roads.
